There is no one course price that buys the license
Separate optional preparation from the charges associated with the qualification and application route. A course payment does not pay the regulator, reserve an exam appointment, or complete fingerprints. The Academy course costs $39 one time for educational access. That price is not the cost of the license, and it does not include agency, testing, fingerprinting, or destination-state charges. Verify your route first so you do not pay for an unnecessary step.
Build a source-linked cost worksheet
Use a separate row for each charge that applies to your profile. Record the payee, purpose, amount shown by the current official source, refund or rescheduling conditions, and the date checked. Some steps or exemptions depend on your current licenses or background. Avoid copying an all-in estimate from another candidate whose route differs. A blank row pending verification is more honest and useful than a confident total built from unrelated fees.
- Confirm the resident, nonresident, or DHS route.
- Record any exam charge from Pearson’s current materials.
- Check applicable fingerprint instructions and charges.
- Record the TDI application charge for the correct application.
- Add optional study costs and a contingency for changed plans.
Keep approved education and independent prep separate
If you choose a TDI-approved program that qualifies for an exam exemption under current rules, its price and conditions belong in the qualification row. Independent prep belongs in an optional study row. These are not equivalent purchases. Verify approval, timing, and eligibility through TDI before assuming one replaces another. The Academy does not claim approved-course status and should not be budgeted as a way to obtain an exemption.
Include maintenance and additional jurisdictions
Initial qualification is only one stage. Renewal, continuing education, additional-state applications, and any assignment-specific requirements may create later costs. Keep those in a separate maintenance or expansion budget rather than quietly folding them into a license-startup number. Verify each destination with its own regulator. Reciprocity may simplify a qualification requirement without eliminating applications or charges, and emergency authorization is not a general substitute for ordinary licensing.
Make the course decision on learning needs
Use the free study guide and public practice sample to see whether structured preparation would address your gaps. The paid course offers sequenced lessons, additional questions, quizzes, and review; it does not guarantee a pass or save a particular retake amount. Compare what you need with what is included, then keep the educational purchase separate from the official charges. Recheck the worksheet before scheduling or submitting because requirements and vendor policies can change.
Questions about this decision
Does the $39 course include the licensing exam?
No. The purchase is educational portal access. Official exam, fingerprinting, application, and other licensing charges are separate.
Why not publish one total for everyone?
The applicable route, exemptions, optional preparation, and later jurisdictions differ. Verify each required charge with its official payee instead of relying on a universal estimate.
